Adolescent Literacy Program Instructor

Teach literacy skills to English Language Learners in 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grades at an after school program operating three days a week, five hours a week during after-school hours. Develop individual education plans for each student, develop lesson plans, provide instruction, evaluate participant progress, track relevant data, communicate with parents, supervise assistant instructors and volunteer tutors, attend mandatory professional development trainings and meet regularly with supervisor and other staff members to share best practices and address challenges. Qualifications:

  • Must be a literacy coach with a Master’s degree in reading or a certified teacher.
  • Must have at least three years experience providing literacy instruction to English Language Learners.
  • Must have experience working with middle school students. Familiarity with LAS Links test is desirable.
  • Must be committed to providing services in a manner that is sensitive to the diverse cultures and backgrounds of participants

POSITIONS IN ADMINISTRATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Assistant Director, Center for Active Older Adults

The Center for Active Older Adults at Sunnyside Community Services is seeking an Assistant Director. The Center serves a diverse population of approximately 250 older adults daily. We are seeking an Assistant Director who will implement innovative program offerings to include creative approaches to meeting the needs of this growing population. In coordination with the Department Director, this position is responsible for the overall functioning of the Center, including both program and operations. He/she is responsible for the planning, coordination and scheduling of all program activities.

Working with the Department Director, the Assistant Director will contribute to the development and implementation of organizational systems to increase the effectiveness of the Center, including greater coordination of information between the Center and other support services (i.e. Facilities, Human Resources, Office Management).

The Assistant Director will provide supervision and management of transportation and food services staff and equipment, including, compliance with external and funding source requirements, including the Department of Health. Responsibilities include:

  • Interacts and assists members with their immediate concerns
  • Coordinates and schedules activities and programs based upon client interest
  • Develops strategies for outreach and publicity to attract new members and raise attendance at the Center
  • Hire and or supervise consultants and volunteers
  • Responsible for contract compliance including the tracking and accurate reporting of the program’s deliverables on a daily and monthly basis
  • Supervise collection and accounting of daily receivables (e.g. lunch, trips and other monies)
  • Work as part of a team with the other senior services and agency staff and other community-based providers in coordinating care and services to members
  • Supervise production of the monthly newsletter for the Center
  • Works closely with the Advisory Committee of the Center to ensure quality programming to members
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as needed

Qualifications: This position requires a combination of supervisory, managerial, administrative, as well as direct service skills and a commitment to working with seniors to improve their quality of life. The ideal candidate will be proactive and visionary; energetic and creative, well-organized and motivated. Candidates should have experience and interest in working with

  • older adults in a community setting
  • experience with publicly and privately funded programs
  • strong organizational, supervisory and managerial skills
  • excellent interpersonal skills
  • strong written, verbal, and computer skills, including Excel
  • BSW/BA required, however an MSW is preferred
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is strongly preferred

Associate Executive Director for Community Services

The associate executive director will manage the community service division's array of diverse youth, family, and senior programs; participate as a senior-level member of the executive team that manages the agency; and work toward an integrated program model that maintains and expands the continuum of services for the benefit of participants. The associate executive director reports to the executive director

Responsibilities:

  • Managing the youth & family services department and senior services, with a budget of 5.7 million
  • Managing the day-to-day operations, strategic direction, and oversight of the various service programs of the agency
  • Direct supervision of two assistant executive directors (youth and family services; senior services)
  • Membership in the executive management team of the agency
  • With the management team, agency-wide responsibilities for long-tem planning, program development and evaluation, and agency systems
  • With program directors, implementation of strategic plan goals for community service programs
  • Ensuring the quality of program performance and outcome measures for each program; ensuring the quality and timeliness of individual employee evaluations
  • Working closely with development and fiscal directors, oversee department budgeting and spending as well as public and private grant dollars coming into the department.
  • Integrate advocacy work and community organizing into programs
  • Identifying community and participant needs especially for diverse groups of new immigrants in the service area
  • Designing new programs to further the mission of the agency and stay current with community needs
  • Building relationships with community partners and elected and appointed officials
  • Oversight and management of staff development opportunities
  • Other management responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong manager with a minimum of five years of management experience in government, nonprofit, or social service setting; eight to 10 years preferred.
  • Demonstrated administrative and management skills including experience with large-scale programs that have multiple funding streams, contractual requirements, and performance outcomes
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as ability to follow through independently on assigned tasks
  • Excellent communication skills – strong writing and oral presentation skills
  • Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of youth development, family programming, and senior services
  • Willingness to work with staff on culture change (such as converting to fee-based programs wherever feasible)
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in social work, nonprofit management, or other relevant field is required.
  • Knowledge of Spanish or other major language spoken in Western Queens is a plus.

Administrative Assistant

Performs various tasks including receptionist, word processing, and other clerical and administrative assignments and services. Assists with special administrative projects and office support activities for senior managers and responds to inquiries regarding insurance certificates, contract applications, mail services, and purchase orders. Reports to the Director of Support and Facility Services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides Receptionist coverage as assigned and in the absence of Receptionist/Customer Service Representative.
  • Maintains agency-wide insurance files, including but not limited to, insurance applications, policies and certificates.
  • Requests and coordinates insurance-related reports and/or documents with insurance brokers, including, but not limited to, incident reports
  • Prepares, distributes and files agency reports and government documents electronically or via hard copy.
  • Updates agency room schedule calendar and prepares weekly agency-wide report.
  • Provides clerical/administrative support to facilities staff as needed, including, but not limited to, purchasing, equipment and supply research, and completing and filing building permit applications.
  • Assists with account maintenance of cell phones, fax machines and copiers.
  • Prepares outgoing bulk mail projects, document management and destruction, recording packages, special mail deliveries, internal mail distribution and delivery to local postal office as needed.
  • Update Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Updates personnel directory as assigned and/or as needed.
  • Manages a comprehensive computer and manual filing system.
  • Updates and re-stocks administrative and clerical forms.
  • Types forms or letters, as needed.
  • Prepares meeting rooms, as needed.
  • Participates in CQI, fire safety and staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties and assists with department projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent, college a plus
  • Two years of administrative/office support experience
  • Office experience in purchasing, insurance, home care and/or fiscal services preferred
  • Excellent communication, telephone etiquette and organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments
  • Microsoft Office proficiency, knowledge of database, purchase management software and internet research skills
  • Ability to carry or move moderate sized objects (up to 25 LBS)
