The Beacon Program at IS 5 in Elmhurst serves more than 1,300 students in first through eighth-grades and is open from 3 to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Students in first through fourth grade work on homework and an activity each day. Students in fifth through eighth grade have the choice of an array of activities including dance, gym, science, girls’ empowerment, comic books and more. Students take frequent field trips and perform in program-wide shows.

The Beacon Program also offers the following specialty programs:

Options Program
The Options Program aims at readying middle school students for a successful high school experience by providing test preparation classes for the eighth grade test and the entrance exams for specialized high schools; and by taking trips to various high schools and bringing in experts to address peer and social issues students may face. This program runs from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Literacy Through Photography
Offered to ESL/immigrant students in fifth through eighth grade, Literacy Through Photography is a fun way to improve writing skills while learning photography at the same time.

Satuday/Evening Programs offer a range activities for children and adults, including karate, dance, aerobics, and cooking from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Evening programs include English as a Second Language (ESOL) instruction on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Fusion Dance on Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Latin Beats on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for beginners and 8 to 9:15 p.m. for intermediate dancers; and Karate on Tuesday from 8 to 9 p.m.

The College Readiness Program offers services to high school students through this Beacon Program as well. For information,

Teen Programs

Evening and weekend programs for teenagers and young adults (up to 21 years of age) include a wide range of individual and team sports, arts, drama, and dance (including break dancing), college and career counseling, SAT and Regents classes, job skills training, apprenticeships, and summer youth employment.

 

Programs for Adults

The Beacon offers evening and weekend programs to bring adults together in the community to keep active, continue learning, or just socialize. Activities include low-impact aerobics, ballroom dancing, beginning and intermediate classes in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), and arts and crafts programs and home decorating.
