CAREGIVERS PROGRAM
People who care for physically disabled or cognitively impaired seniors often spend huge amounts of their time and energy attending to the needs of their family members, friends, or neighbors, and don’t know that help is available. Sunnyside Community Services coordinates the Western Queens Caregivers Network (WQCN) to provide information, referrals, counseling, and other practical and emotional assistance to these caregivers.

Our partners in this Network are the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee (HANAC) and the Institute for the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Elderly (IPR/HE). Together we are able to provide help in English, Spanish, Greek, Hindi, and many other languages.

For information about the following services for caregivers, call (718) 784-6173, ext. 440 (TDD/TTY (800) 662-1220). To speak with someone at HANAC, call (718) 728-3586; for IPR/HE, call (718) 478-7171

Support Group for Fall 2007

SCS is offering a free caregivers support group for individuals who may be feeling depressed, anxious, or overwhelmed by their responsibilities. Led by Joanne Lehman, LCSW, coordinator of SCS’ Geriatric Mental Health Initiative, the group will meet one evening a week starting in October. Interested participants must attend a preliminary interview with Ms. Lehman before joining the group. To schedule an appointment, please call (718) 784-6173, ext. 431 (TDD/TTY (800) 662-1220).

Information and Referral

A hotline is staffed by counselors who offer individualized information to caregivers. The counselors maintain a database of information and resources for caregivers and care recipients, and are able to help the caregivers find information and educational programs on specific issues and problems they face. The counselors also keep lists of organizations in each community that provide services such as adult day care and respite, home care, case management, and counseling and support, refer callers, and follow-up to ensure that services are received.

Counseling

Some caregivers are experiencing severe stress in their own lives that result from the demands of caregiving. They are referred to a social worker who provides support and problem solving about their own caregiving issues, and may be referred to a support group.

Direct Assistance

In addition to referrals, the Network can provide some direct assistance including respite and supplemental services (such as home care and adult day services, entitlements and benefits assistance, transportation, minor home repairs, and certain supplies) to assist eligible caregivers and care recipients in appropriate circumstances.
