Youth programs
started in 1983 with a small after-school program at PS 199
and a Summer-in-the Parks program. Together these programs
served about 750 elementary-school children. Today SCS’s
programs form a broad continuum of services for about 2,500
children from five to 21 years of age.

The PS 150 program serves more than 200 students in kindergarten through sixth grade from PS 150 and the surrounding community. It operates Monday through Friday from the close of school at 2:30 until 5:30 p.m., and provides full-day programming on many school holidays.
Monday through Thursday the program provides time for students to complete their homework and to then take part in a rotating selection of activities including sports, martial arts, visual and performing arts, and science. Fridays are Club Days on which students do not do homework, but instead select a special club project to work on for several weeks. These clubs typically result in a show or event which is open to families and the community.

The PS 199 program serves 250 students in kindergarten through fifth grade from PS 199 and the surrounding community. The program operates Monday through Friday from 3-5 p.m.
Monday through Thursday the program provides time for students to complete their homework and to then take part in a rotating selection of activities including karate, locking (dance), violin, and sports. One highlight is Literacy Fridays, on which students do not do homework, but instead take part in a theme-based project connected to reading. There are regularly scheduled shows for student performances, and the program also operates a summer camp for approximately 50 students in the community, starting in 2008.
An important aspect of the PS 199 program is the Family Literacy Program, designed for immigrant parents and children to participate in an assortment of fun activities aimed at increasing English proficiency, improving computer skills, and understanding the New York City Department of Education. Adult sessions for this program meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 3-5 p.m.; participants must attend all sessions. Children's sessions are Monday through Thursday from 3-5 p.m. Parent and Child Together Time (PACT) is Monday through Thursday from 5-6 p.m., during which parents can participate in literacy activities with their children. Parent Resource time is also provided on Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. to help parents learn about an array of issues focused on their childs education and their familys needs, such as health care, immigration information, child developmental stages, and how to help their children with schoolwork.
Options
An after-school program at IS 125 has middle-school children
mentoring elementary-school children
to help them make a successful transition to middle school.
Because identifying and applying to the appropriate high school
can be a daunting process, middle-school children in this program receive
counseling on how to select and work toward admission to high
schools of their choice, attend study skills workshops, and
receive help to prepare them for standardized examinations.
School vacation and summer camps
SCS runs summer day camps at the Beacon, serving about 300
children in six-week sessions. Vacation camps are operated
at the Beacon during the winter and spring school vacations.
Serving a total of more than 400 children, the camps provide
a balanced program of learning activities, recreation, and
arts and culture each day.

College Readiness Program
SCS’ College Readiness Program prepares high school students and recent graduates, ages 14-21, for the college admissions process.
The program is designed to allow participants to receive a well-rounded understanding of the system of higher education in order to make the appropriate academic choices that will benefit them in the future. Through regular and advanced SAT and SAT II classes, college/university admissions and financial aid workshops, college trips, college essay and application building sessions, college-style reading and writing seminars, and individual advisement, students become well-versed on college admissions criteria, build their skills for standardized examinations (SATs and SAT IIs), improve their writing, locate various scholarship opportunities, and complete necessary applications for college/university admissions and financial aid. The College Readiness Program also publishes a newsletter, The College Front, three times a year to inform participants of college and university opportunities and deadlines.
For information, see the CRP website and/or

GED
classes
Young adults drop out of high school for many reasons. SCS
has a partnership with the New York City Department of Education
to provide GED classes combined with counseling, employment
readiness training, and other assistance.
For information, call (718) 784-6173, ext. 429 (TDD/TTY (800) 662-1220).
Apprenticeship and youth employment
programs
High-school, college, and GED students receive job-readiness
and skills training, including resume preparation, job interviewing,
business letters, etc., that prepares them for employment.
Some are helped to find jobs in the community or are able
to win promotions at their current workplace.
Younger participants
may be given jobs as paid apprentices in SCS’s after-school
programs and vacation camps. As SCS staff, apprentices receive ongoing
supervision and on-the-job training, as well as education
and employment counseling, academic enhancement, and
communication skills workshops.
