SERVICES FOR IMMIGRANTS

Many residents in our vibrant immigrant communities routinely participate in Sunnyside Community Services' social, educational, and recreational programs, but services designed especially for new immigrants have been started only recently. Because Western Queens celebrates a great diversity of backgrounds and expanding groups of newcomers, we are committed to developing services and working with other organizations to address the needs of these new community members.

CITIZENSHIP CLASSES

Classes for immigrant residents of Western Queens help prepare for the oral citizenship exam. Classes are offered at our Senior Center on two afternoons a week. While most participants are members of our Center, classes are open to all community residents.
For information on citizenship or ESOL classes, call (718) 784-6944, ext. 411 (TDD/TTY (800) 662-1220).

ESOL CLASSES

Beginning and intermediate classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages are offered two days a week for seniors at the Senior Center. Individuals of all ages studying for the citizenship examination are encouraged to participate in the ESOL classes as well.

JOB TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT

Because so many of our homebound clients are immigrants, and because our community has a reservoir of culturally compatible residents whose greatest bar to employment may involve limited English-language skills, our licensed home care agency, Sunnyside Home Care Project, continually recruits and provides job-skills training for area residents who want to become home health aides and home attendants. When resources are available, we also provide vocational ESL for trainees, to help them participate fully as members of a professional home-care team.

To see currently available positions, go to the Job Announcement page. Or, to apply for employment, call (718) 784-6160, ex. 340 (TDD/TTY (800) 662-1220).
