The Custodian is a member of the Facilities Services team, which is responsible for maintaining the building and grounds. The Custodian ensures that the building is maintained to provide a clean and safe environment for staff, program participants, and visitors. The Custodian is also part of a team that collaborates to meet the agency’s goals and objectives as outlined in the Facility Management Plan.
Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance
- Ensure the grounds are clean and free of hazards, including snow removal during winter months.
- Ensure all common areas of the building are clean, including elevators, stairs, hallways, staff lounge, and restrooms.
- Remove trash and recyclables daily.
- Clean desks, file cabinets, windowsills, blinds, refrigerators, microwaves, vents, and fans as needed.
- Vacuum carpets daily
- Replace light bulbs and air conditioner filters as needed.
- Perform minor repairs, including but not limited to general maintenance, basic electrical, plumbing, painting, and carpentry.
- Maintain basement storage areas, including retrieval and delivery of boxes.
- Ensure all areas are clean and disinfected and sanitized according to CDC and NYS guidelines.
- Maintain cleaning and sanitizing schedule set forth by agency.
- Ability to work at all SCS facility locations as needed.
- Ability to work different shifts, including overtime, as needed.
Fire Safety Activities
- Ability to operate fire safety equipment and perform routine inspections and fire drills.
- Check that emergency lighting and exit signs are operable.
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills and procedures.
Facility Improvements
- Conduct furniture moves as needed.
- Perform floor care procedures such as stripping, waxing, and polishing.
- Provide feedback and make suggestions on areas of improvement within the agency.
Room Setups
- Ensure timely room setups for meetings, trainings, and events as per program’s specifications.
- Ensures rooms are clean prior to and after a meeting, training, or event.
- Communicate with program staff regarding setup needs.
- Make recommendations regarding appropriate rooms for scheduled events.
Specialized Skills and Competencies:
- Interpersonal and Customer Service Skills: As this role involves various interactions agency-wide, the Custodian must be able to interact with staff in a thoughtful, respectful, and dignified manner.
- Problem-Solving Skills: As this role involves identifying potential hazards, the Custodian must have the ability to respond to situations quickly and prioritize actions steps for resolution.
- Time Management/Prioritization Skills: As timely room setups and adherence to cleaning schedules are required, the Custodian must be adept at managing both his/her time and be able to multitask and prioritize assignments.
- Communication Skills: As communication with program staff is key to providing effective customer service, the Custodian must be able to speak clearly and convey information as needed. This includes communicating and sharing ideas amongst the Facilities team and his/her supervisor.
- General Custodial Skills: As the Custodian is responsible for the cleanliness of the grounds and building general skills such as cleaning, rug/floor care, trash removable, and general repair knowledge is key to meeting agency-wide facility management objectives.
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, and move/lift items (up to 50 lbs.).
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 1-3 years of experience in maintenance or as a custodian.
- Ability to work flexible hours including late nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work at all SCS facility locations as needed.
- Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry a plus.
- Current fire safety certifications a plus.
Job Classification: Non – Exempt
Reports to: Facility Services Manager
Compensation: $17.75 – $19.00 per hour
